Kinesiology & Flower Essences: Listening to What Your Body Already Knows

There is an intelligence in your body that goes far beyond what the conscious mind can access. It remembers every experience you have ever had. It holds your emotional history in its tissues and cells. It knows, at a level deeper than thought, exactly what it needs to heal, to rebalance, and to thrive. The question is: how do we access that knowing?
This is where kinesiology and its profound partnership with flower essences comes in. At Balance & Body, kinesiology is one of the tools I am most passionate about, because it puts the wisdom of healing back where it belongs: in you. Let me share how it works, and how I use it in my practice to create truly personalised flower essence blends for my clients.
What Is Kinesiology?
Kinesiology sometimes called applied kinesiology or muscle testing is a holistic healing modality that uses the body's own muscular response as a biofeedback system to identify imbalances and access information that the conscious mind may not be aware of. It was developed in the 1960s by American chiropractor Dr George Goodheart, who discovered that individual muscles were energetically connected to specific organ systems, meridians, and emotional states a finding that aligned remarkably with the ancient principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
The foundational principle is elegantly simple: when the body is in a state of coherence energetically aligned and at ease with a stimulus or statement the muscles remain strong. When the body encounters something that creates energetic dissonance or stress, the muscles momentarily weaken. This response happens involuntarily, at a level below conscious control, making it a remarkably honest system of communication.
Over the decades since Goodheart's initial discoveries, kinesiology has expanded into many branches and modalities including Touch for Health, LEAP Kinesiology, Systematic Kinesiology, and more each exploring different aspects of the body-mind connection and developing increasingly sophisticated ways of working with the body's innate intelligence.
How Does Muscle Testing Work?
In a typical muscle testing session, the practitioner asks the client to hold their arm extended horizontally. The practitioner then applies gentle, steady pressure to the arm while the client holds a specific thought, substance, or intention in mind. If the arm holds firm resisting the pressure with ease this indicates a 'strong' or 'yes' response. If the arm softens or gives way under gentle pressure, this indicates a 'weak' or 'no' response.
What is happening physiologically is fascinating. Current research suggests that the body's energetic and neurological systems respond to stimuli including thoughts, emotions, and substances in ways that influence muscle tone through the nervous system. The muscle test essentially measures this response in real time, bypassing the conscious mind's tendency to rationalise, override, or suppress what it is experiencing.
It is important to understand that muscle testing is not about physical strength. A person with very little muscular strength will still show clear strong and weak responses. Equally, a physically powerful person can show a weak response to something that creates dissonance in their system. The response is neurological and energetic, not muscular in the conventional sense.
Muscle testing can be used to identify nutritional deficiencies, food sensitivities, emotional blocks, structural imbalances, the most beneficial remedies or supplements for an individual, and much more. It is a conversation a dialogue between the practitioner, the client, and the body's own wisdom.
At Balance & Body we use 'remote kinesiology' where with your permission I perform the muscle testing on myself on your behalf. This means you dont need to be in the same room and it can be done remotely from any location around the world and it takes away any resistance or control from the client. To do this I need the clients permission and during the testing it is intented for the client and to this this I keep my mind clear resting completely in the heart space and am well hyrdrated and balanced.
The Body Knows What It Needs
One of the things I find most profound and most humbling about working with kinesiology is the consistent confirmation it provides that the body truly does know what it needs. Time and again in my practice, clients are surprised by what emerges in a session. The body will indicate a need an emotion to process, a nutrient to support, a pattern to process that the client had not consciously identified, but which immediately resonates as true when named.
This happens because so much of what affects our health and wellbeing lives below the threshold of conscious awareness. We adapt, compensate, and suppress. We intellectualise our emotions or dismiss physical symptoms as unimportant. The body, however, never lies. It simply holds patiently, faithfully everything that has not yet been processed or resolved, waiting for the right moment, the right support, the right question to be asked.
Kinesiology asks the body those questions. And the body answers. This is why I believe so deeply in this approach: it is not the practitioner deciding what a client needs based on protocols or external assessment alone. The client's own body leads the session. My role is to translate its responses, hold the space for what emerges, and offer the tools to support whatever the body is indicating.
Australian Bush Flower Essences: Ancient Land, Profound Healing

Flower essences are vibrational remedies subtle but powerful preparations made by infusing the energy of specific flowers into water, typically in sunlight, and preserving the resulting essence in brandy or another preservative. They work entirely through their energetic imprint, with no physical plant material remaining in the finished remedy. This is why they are considered vibrational medicine: they work at the level of the emotional and energetic body rather than the physical body alone, gently illuminating and shifting underlying patterns rather than suppressing or overriding them.
In my practice, I work exclusively with Australian Bush Flower Essences and for good reason. Developed by fifth-generation Australian herbalist and naturopath Ian White, the Australian Bush Flower Essences are derived from the unique flowering plants of the Australian bush, one of the oldest and most energetically potent landscapes on Earth. The Australian continent has been relatively undisturbed for millions of years, and its native plants have evolved an extraordinary resilience and vibrational clarity that is reflected in the essences made from them.
Ian White spent years travelling Australia, working with Aboriginal elders, and developing deep relationships with the land and its plants before creating each essence. This is not a system assembled from a desk it is rooted in direct, respectful engagement with the land, with plant spirit, and with thousands of years of indigenous wisdom. The result is a range of essences that are considered by many practitioners to be among the most powerful and clear-acting available anywhere in the world.
The Australian Bush Flower Essences address the specific emotional and spiritual challenges of our time with remarkable precision including issues around self-worth, communication, relationships, trauma, spiritual development, and the fast-paced, overstimulating nature of modern life. They do not simply offer comfort; they catalyse genuine shift, supporting people to move out of old patterns and into greater authenticity, clarity, and vitality.
Some of the essences I work with most frequently include Banksia Robur for those feeling depleted and temporarily low in energy; Flannel Flower for difficulties with intimacy and trust; Fringed Violet for energetic protection and healing after trauma; Waratah for courage in times of crisis; and Emergency Essence the Australian Bush equivalent of a rescue remedy which is extraordinary for acute stress, shock, or overwhelm. Each essence has its own distinct personality and area of action, and part of the art of this work is learning to recognise which essence is speaking to which layer of a person's experience.
How I Use Kinesiology to Create Personalised Flower Essence Blends

This is where the two modalities come together in a way that I find endlessly fascinating and consistently effective: using kinesiology to let the body choose its own flower essence blend.
When a client comes to me for a flower essence consultation, we begin with a conversation exploring what is present in their life right now, what feels stuck or challenging, what they are hoping to shift or deepen. This gives me context and helps the client begin to tune into themselves. But the real work happens when we move into the muscle testing.
I work through a range of flower essences systematically, holding each bottle and testing the muscular response on the clients behalf. Some essences will consistently produce a strong response indicating that the body recognises them as relevant and beneficial. Others will produce a neutral or weak response indicating that while the remedy may be valuable in other circumstances, it is not what this person needs right now.
What emerges from this process is always unique. Two clients presenting with similar emotional experiences grief, for example, or anxiety will often test strongly for entirely different essences, reflecting the entirely different nature of their individual experience, history, and energetic makeup. This is the great gift of kinesiology in this context: it prevents the 'one size fits all' approach and ensures that every blend I create is truly tailored to the individual.
Once we have identified the essences the body has selected typically between three and four for a blend I prepare a personalised bottle with specific intention, usually a four-week course taken as drops under the tongue several times daily. I also take note of the essences chosen, as they often reveal themes and patterns that are valuable to explore together insights that the body has offered through its selections.
What Can Flower Essences Help With?
The range of states that flower essences address is broad and deep. Common areas where clients find them profoundly supportive include anxiety, fear, and worry; grief and loss; feeling stuck or lacking direction; difficulty with change and transition; low confidence or self-worth; overwhelm and burnout; relationship difficulties; creative blocks; and the aftermath of trauma or significant life events.
They are also wonderfully supportive during times of growth and transformation — when old patterns are releasing and new ways of being are establishing themselves. In these periods, flower essences can help to smooth the process, reduce the emotional turbulence of change, and support the integration of new insights and experiences.
Because flower essences are entirely safe and carry no risk of side effects or interactions with medications, they can be used by people of all ages from infants to the elderly and in all health circumstances. They work gently but often surprisingly quickly, and many clients notice shifts within days of beginning a blend.
A Session at Balance & Body: What to Expect
A kinesiology and flower essence session at Balance & Body is a gentle, conversational, and often deeply insightful experience. Sessions typically last between 60 and 90 minutes, and just an open mind and a willingness to listen to what your body has to say.
We begin with a brief initial conversation, I then remotely move into the muscle testing process, and there is no requirement to be present. Just leave me to the testing which takes about an hour and end with the preparation of your personalised flower essence blend and a discussion of any themes or patterns that have emerged. Many clients find that the session itself the experience of being heard at a body level is as therapeutic as the remedy they leave with.
Follow-up sessions are typically recommended after four weeks, to reassess and update the blend as the body shifts and evolves. Many clients find that kinesiology and flower essences become a cornerstone of their ongoing self-care and personal development practice.
